The holiday season, a time traditionally filled with joyful get-togethers, can come with a bag of mixed emotions for those grieving the loss of a loved one. Not a holiday goes by without me missing my angel mother. Here are a few things and mindset shifts that help me cope with not having my loved one around to celebrate. May the following tips bring you or someone you know some form of comfort during this challenging time.
Hold onto Traditions: If certain holiday traditions remind you of your loved one, honor them. Light their favorite candle, play their cherished holiday song, or cook their favorite dish.
Create a Tribute: Set up a small space in your home with photos or mementos that bring back fond memories; this can be a comforting corner for reflection, allowing you to feel close to them in spirit.
Allow Yourself to Grieve: There's no 'right' way to feel during the holidays after a loss. Permit yourself to experience a range of emotions. It's okay to feel joyful in one moment and tearful in the next.
Seek Support: Surround yourself with people who understand and respect your need to grieve. Joining a support group can also be comforting, as sharing your feelings with those who have experienced similar losses can be incredibly healing.
The holiday season can be overwhelming. Ensure you're taking time for yourself, including a quiet walk, a relaxing bath, or immersing yourself in a hobby that brings you peace.
Focus on the Love, Not the Loss: It's easy to be overwhelmed by the absence of a loved one. Try to shift your focus to the love and joy they brought into your life. Celebrate the time you had together and their impact on your life.

Your journey through grief is deeply personal. Be kind to yourself; there's no timeline or right way for healing. As you navigate this holiday season, remember that it's okay to find joy amidst sorrow. The love you shared with your departed loved one is a testament to the beautiful bond you had. It's this love that will carry you through the holidays and beyond.
