I Reconnected with My Inner Child and Found the Joy that was Missing

ree

One of my most loved memories of the year was taking our boys to Playland. At first, it didn’t seem like a big deal; our friend had extra tickets and gave them to us. Always looking for ways to keep the kids busy, we accepted the tickets, loaded the car, and made our way to Playland Theme Park. Playland has been in New York since what seems like the creation of Earth; I went there frequently as a child but haven’t been back in decades. To be honest, I even forgot about it. But baby, all the excitement and positive childhood memories rushed back as soon as I entered the park!

We were there for the kids, but my inner child was doing backflips and cartwheels. I had so much joy watching my boys enjoy some of the same rides I enjoyed as a child. I tried to stay exclusively in adult mode, but that didn’t last long. I laughed the whole time and was just as excited as our kids to go on the next ride! It was the first time in a long time that I experienced a whole joy from both my inner child and outer adult. I felt complete, overwhelmed with happiness, at peace, and mindful of our time together. Connecting with my inner child allowed me to put the pressures and responsibilities of adulthood aside a little to make room for joy.

After a fun-filled day at the theme park, I realized children know how to have fun and live in the moment. For those of us struggling to reconnect with our inner child, here are some ways to bridge the gap:

1. Do what you loved to do as a kid.

2. Set aside time to engage in activities that don’t have an end goal or purpose other than having fun.

3. Allow yourself to appreciate the little things and enjoy your surroundings like a child.

Incorporating play and laughter into your routine can reduce stress, lower anxiety, and

promote better mental health. Sometimes, all we need is to let go and enjoy simple pleasures, just like a child. As adults we often get caught up in serious matters and forget to enjoy life’s simple joys. Whether having fun with friends, swinging at the park, or getting lost in a good book, reconnecting with your inner child can bring happiness, healing, and a renewed sense of wonder into your life. Let go and have fun!

What makes your inner child happy?
